Horse Rider Workshops
Why attend?
Have you had yourself checked out? You've had your saddle checked, had the equine physio out, had his teeth checked, but have you ever had yourself checked out?
I bet you haven't!
Why not?
It seems an obvious thing to do, afterall the rider can't ride an unlevel horse, so we shouldn't expect the horse to carry an unlevel rider!
So often a horse's problems are attributed to ill fitting tack, but surely an ill fitting rider is going to do far more damage!
Lunge a horse in a badly fitted saddle and you may get away with it. Ride it in a correctly fitted saddle and ill fitting rider and doubtless you won't get away with it! And heaven help the horse if both saddle and rider are ill fitting!
Performance of both horse and rider will be impeded if you are not sat square
Even if your horse does not display signs of pain, performance will be impeded if you are not sat square.
You may have noticed every time you ask your horse to halt, his quarters swing to one side, or perhaps you consistently find it more difficult to leg yield to the left than the right. Your horse may always fall in more on one rein and out on the other, and feel less responsive to one leg aid than the other.
You may develop aches or niggles in certain areas when riding, which hinder your ability.
If so then perhaps you are wonky!!
However, this does not mean you have to remain wonky!
GET CHECKED OUT BY A CHARTERED PHYSIOTHERAPIST BY ATTENDING A PHYSIO 4 HORSE RIDERS WORKSHOP.
Workshop format
Introduction
- General Introduction to rider related issues and postural mal-alignments
- Highlight your own specific problems when riding, performance issues, pains, injuries, ailments!
- Think about your lifestyle which may affect your body alignment
- Profile of your horse
- Demonstration of possible effects of our position on our horse's performance
Practical
- Assessment of your balance and symmetry
- Assess your mobility and strength at the hips, pelvis, spine, legs, making comparisons between the right and left
- Test your ability to dissociate moving one part of your body in isolation from another
- Assess proprioception (body awareness).
After the assessment a restriction to movement may have been found that could benefit from some hands on techniques to help release it. If so, at your agreement you may receive some hands on treatment if deemed necessary.
Corrective Exercises
- You will be given specific exercises to help correct any imbalances found, and these will be practised and checked carefully so that you are confident about performing them yourself! Written guidelines will be provided.
- Mounted demonstration ( NO HORSE required!) This will consist of sitting on a saddle on a saddle horse! Mounted exercises will be suggested.
Stable management: Tips to prevent injury!
- Riding alone can cause problems, but what about stable management?
- Now that is a strenuous occupation, and one that will cause cumulative strain on the spine and joints if techniques are poor!
Strategies for stabilising your spine will be taught while, for example:
- Picking out feet
- Tightening your girth
- Lifting overhead, eg ramp on horse box
- Bending and lifting water buckets, bales etc
Group Size
Group size will be limited to 6 people which will allow more individual attention and better value for money. I am hoping to have a second physiotherapist assisting me where possible.
